7 Days of Rhinos, Kidepo Valley National Park, along with Murchison Falls National Park – Best Uganda Wildlife Safari

Day 1: From Kampala to Ziwa Rhinos, then Gulu or Kitgum

We’ll start your African Adventure Safari by picking you up from your accommodation in Kampala or Entebbe. Our destination includes the most remote parts of Uganda: Kidepo Valley Park and Murchison Falls National Park. Our drive takes us through central Uganda, stopping at Ziwa to visit the Rhino Sanctuary. Upon arrival, a sanctuary ranger greets you, introducing you to the sanctuary and providing information about the rhinos. We’ll drive you to the nearest point where you can safely walk up and observe the rhinos.

This close and safe encounter with the rhinos is a fantastic 1-2 hour African experience. The sanctuary also offers clean and basic lodging with a restaurant serving delicious food and drinks. We’ll likely have lunch here before continuing to either Gulu or Kitgum, less than two hours from Gulu town.

Upon arrival, we’ll check you into your preferred lodge for dinner and a good night’s sleep. Gulu offers a variety of decent hotels that can be quickly booked. We recommend Churchill Courts Hotel in Gulu and Acholi Pride Guest House in Kitgum. Kitgum has fewer high-end lodging options, but its guest houses offer a familial atmosphere. Both locations are within walking distance of restaurants serving good meals, the town center, and the bar district. They serve as excellent stopping points on the way to or from Kidepo Valley National Park, offering you a chance to experience a town recovering from 21 years of conflict caused by Joseph Kony’s LRA.

Day 2: From Gulu/Kitgum to Kidepo Valley National Park

After an early morning breakfast at your lodge, we’ll head to the rarely visited Kidepo Valley National Park in North Eastern Uganda, near the Kenya and Sudan borders. The long drive deters many, but those who undertake it find themselves amazed by the sights and experiences along the way. Our route takes us through the Karamajong region, home to pastoralists who maintain their ancient, cattle-centered culture. The journey offers many intriguing sights and activities. Depending on your location the previous night, we’ll either have lunch en route or at your lodge in Kidepo.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at the secluded Apoka Lodge, where you can unwind with a refreshing drink. Absorb the tranquil atmosphere, punctuated by distant sounds of wildlife. After settling in, get ready for an exceptional dinner and relish the atmosphere of an African night.

Day 3: Kidepo Game Safari & Karamojong Cultural Tour in the Afternoon

Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast and a cup of coffee or tea, as you take in the surrounding landscape and wildlife from the most remote yet luxurious corner of Uganda. Gear up for an early morning game drive through Narus Valley, where you’ll encounter large herds of buffalo roaming the grasslands. “Bullbull” the elephant often visits the lodge or camp, and you might also spot lions, leopards, and elusive cheetahs. Zebras, giraffes, waterbucks, monkeys, and jackals may come close to the huts, making this park a unique gem in East Africa.

The drive proceeds at a leisurely pace, allowing you to capture photographs of the stunning wildlife, birds, and scenery. In this isolated part of Uganda, you’re more likely to find animals and birds than people.

After the drive, head back to your lodge for a delicious lunch. If you’re staying at Apoka Lodge, this is the perfect time for a dip in the pool, allowing you to enjoy luxury in the heart of wild Africa.

In the afternoon, embark on a walking safari led by a ranger, followed by a cultural tour of a local Karamojong village. Learn about this proud tribe that has resisted most external influences. Their cattle-centric culture is comparable to that of the better-known Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania. Witness their unique lifestyle, including their food preparation, dances, and the deep significance cattle hold for them.

Conclude your day by returning to the lodge for dinner and a serene night in the wilderness. Here, the only soundtrack is the soothing sounds of the African night in Kidepo Park.

Day 4: Game Safari and Return to Gulu

After breakfast, embark on another morning game drive as we head back to Gulu. Each game drive is unique, offering new sights of landscapes, animals, and birds. Keep your camera ready to capture extraordinary moments. Traditional villages and sorghum fields will also dot your route. Enjoy lunch along the way before arriving in Gulu for dinner at your preferred lodging.

Day 5: From Gulu to Murchison Falls for a Game Safari

Begin your day with an early breakfast, and then drive to Murchison Falls National Park. Witness local life and landscapes, including the historic Nile River and roadside wildlife. We’ll take a less-traveled entrance to the park, arriving at Paraa Lodge in time for lunch and check-in. Your room will overlook the River Nile, offering a swimming pool and great views. In the late afternoon, set out for a game drive to see lions, elephants, giraffes, abundant birdlife, and possibly a leopard preparing for a night hunt. Dine at Paraa Lodge while overlooking the Nile, and later, relax on your balcony to the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day 6: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Nile Boat Safari

Start with an early breakfast before launching into another game drive across the savannah and along Lake Albert Delta. Witness a rich array of wildlife, from lions and leopards to elephants and buffaloes. After lunch, experience a Nile River boat safari, offering views of crocodiles, hippos, elephants, and various birds. Your boat will maneuver along the riverbank, providing opportunities for wildlife observation before you head back to your lodging for dinner and relaxation. Listen to the unique sounds of the African night, a stark contrast to the noise of cities like Berlin, London, or New York.

Day 7: Visit Murchison Falls and Drive to Kampala

After breakfast, prepare for your return to Kampala. First, we’ll stop at the top of Murchison Falls, where the sheer power of the falls shakes the Earth and mist creates rainbows. Following that, we’ll drive to Masindi, stopping for lunch at Masindi Hotel—famous for hosting Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn during the filming of “The African Queen.” Continue the journey to Kampala, arriving in the afternoon.
